Offshore Wind Careers: The Skills That Transfer from Oil & Gas
If you have built a career in oil and gas, you have probably been told more than once that your skills are heading for the scrapheap. Let us be clear from the outset: they are not. More than 90% of the oil and gas workforce has skills that transfer to offshore renewables. You are not starting from zero - in most cases you are starting from somewhere very close to the front.
The pressure to move is real, mind you. Robert Gordon University's Striking the Balance report puts the UK oil and gas workforce on course to fall from 115,000 in 2024 to between 57,000 and 71,000 by the early 2030s, warning that in the lower case the North Sea workforce could shrink by "approximately 400 jobs - the same number lost as a result of the closure of the Grangemouth refinery - every two weeks for the next 5 years." But the smarter way to read that is as an opportunity opening up, not just a door closing.
Here is the honest version of what carries across to offshore wind, discipline by discipline, and what you will likely need to top up.
Marine operations
If you have spent your career around offshore logistics, vessel coordination, marine warranty, dynamic positioning or working at height and over water, you are already fluent in the language of an offshore wind farm. Construction and O&M campaigns run on crew transfer vessels, service operation vessels, jack-ups and heavy-lift spreads - the same planning, weather-window judgement and marine risk thinking you do now.
What transfers directly: offshore mobilisation, marine coordination, permit-to-work, sea survival and helicopter underwater escape training (HUET, via your existing OPITO/BOSIET certs), and the instinct for how operations behave in a North Sea swell.
What you may need to top up: wind-specific safety standards. The Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Basic Safety Training is the sector's common currency, and there is a fair amount of overlap with what you already hold. The Energy Skills Passport, launched by OEUK and RenewableUK, exists precisely to map your existing tickets against the GWO modules you still need, so you are not paying to re-sit training you've already done.
Project management
Offshore wind is, at its core, a megaproject business - and megaproject discipline is exactly what oil and gas has spent decades perfecting. Stage-gate delivery, FID processes, contractor management, interface coordination across packages, schedule and cost control: it all maps over. RenewableUK's June 2025 Wind Industry Skills Intelligence Report explicitly flags "technical manager" and "installation engineer" as roles where the sector needs more people, and it names oil and gas as a prime source of that talent.
What transfers directly: end-to-end project controls, EPC contract management, risk registers, stakeholder management and the ability to hold a complex offshore programme together.
What you may need to top up: familiarity with the consenting and grid-connection landscape (The Crown Estate leasing rounds, offshore transmission, Contracts for Difference) and the specific commercial structures of wind. That is reading and exposure, not a retrain.
Commissioning
Commissioning engineers are some of the most directly transferable people in the entire energy sector. The job - bringing complex systems safely from "built" to "operating," chasing down faults, managing handover - is fundamentally the same whether the asset is a platform or a turbine array.
What transfers directly: systems completion, pre-commissioning and commissioning methodology, fault-finding under pressure, and rigorous handover documentation.
What you may need to top up: turbine-specific and electrical systems knowledge, plus GWO working-at-height and rescue training for nacelle access. The Energy Skills Passport lists commissioning technician among its mapped wind roles, which tells you the industry already sees this as a natural crossover.
HSE (health, safety and environment)
If there is one area where North Sea professionals can walk in and add value on day one, it is safety culture. The offshore oil and gas industry's HSE regime - born of hard lessons - is world-class, and the wind sector knows it. At the Energy Skills Passport launch, Wood's Steve Nicol noted the work would "ensure consistency across health and safety practices" across the integrated sector.
What transfers directly: permit-to-work systems, risk assessment, incident investigation, safety case thinking, behavioural safety leadership and offshore medical/fitness standards.
What you may need to top up: the specific regulatory framework around wind, and GWO-aligned standards. The mindset is the asset here, and the mindset is identical.
Electrical disciplines
This is where demand is sharpest. RenewableUK's 2025 report names "high voltage cable specialist" and wind turbine technician among the roles with the most acute skills shortages. If you have HV authorisation, instrumentation, or electrical maintenance experience offshore, the sector wants to talk to you.
What transfers directly: HV switching and authorisation discipline, electrical fault diagnosis, instrumentation and control, and offshore electrical safety.
What you may need to top up: turbine-specific HV systems, array and export cable knowledge, and GWO training including the specialist working-at-height and confined-space modules. The High Voltage Senior Authorised Person pathway is one the industry has deliberately built out for crossover candidates.
The window is now
RGU describes a workforce "goldilocks zone" between 2025 and 2030 - a narrow period in which experienced people can move across before skills are lost. Meanwhile RenewableUK projects the total UK wind workforce reaching over 112,000 by 2030, with the highest demand in Scotland, the East of England, and Yorkshire and the Humber. OEUK, in its November 2025 Workforce Insight, makes the same point from the other direction: the goal is to "build the energy jobs of the future on the shoulders of energy workers today."
The takeaway is straightforward. Your experience is not a sunk cost - it is the most sought-after thing in the room. The gaps are real but small, and largely about certification rather than capability.
